‘Jackets headline women’s basketball All-UMAC awards

ST. PAUL, Minn. (February 28, 2018)The Yellowjackets were riddled among the All-UMAC selections Wednesday afternoon, including Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) who won her third consecutive UMAC Player of the Year award.

The Yellowjackets were a powerhouse once again this season. As a team, the Yellowjackets were narrowly second in scoring (74.3 ppg) and led the league in scoring defense (45.5 ppg), field goal percentage (43.3), field goal defense (32.5), 3-point defense (21.9), rebounding (44.8), rebounding defense (32.8), rebounding margin (12.1), turnover margin (7.56), assist/turnover (1.10) and steals per game (13.06). 

Kontny led the charge for the Yellowjackets as the fourth-leading scorer in conference games this season with 15.9 ppg. The senior also ranked fourth in field goal percentage (42.3) and seventh in rebounds per game (6.6). She also added 2.4 steals per game and 2.0 assists per game. 

Also making a return to the first-team was Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield), who was eighth in the UMAC in scoring with 13.7 points/game and fifth in the league in rebounding with 7.5 rebounds per game, including seven games with a double-double. In the UMAC Championship game, Norlin seized 16 rebounds and dropped in eight points.

Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) found herself on the All-UMAC second team. The senior captain proved to be the best passer for Superior as she averaged a team best 3.6/game, fourth best in the UMAC. She had a great playoff game vs Northwestern in the opening round of the UMAC Tournament as she dropped 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds, assisted four times, blocked three shots, and stole the ball twice.

Another senior captain made an appearance on the All-UMAC Honorable Mention squad; Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover). Leger was a sharpshooter for Superior, knocking down 36 shots from deep to lead the team and good for 41.1 percent.

Kontny and Larson also found themselves on the All-Defensive team, Jade Tucker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) was named to the All-Sportsmanship team, and head coach Zach Otto-Fisher was named the UMAC Coach of the Year.
