UW-Superior 76, St. Scholastica 29
DULUTH, Minn. (January 31, 2018) – It was the Yellowjacket defense that won the day over the Scholastica Saints Wednesday night, holding the Saints to only 18.6 percent shooting.
Jade Tucker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) got to the line early in the contest, sinking 1-of-2 free throws at the 9:55 mark, and Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) would add two more points on the layup to make it a 3-0'Jacket lead early. It soon became a 9-3 lead after two buckets from Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and Kontny. Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) would get on the board at 3:40 on a layup assisted by Kontny, followed by Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) with her first two points, opening the game to 18-3 after one quarter.
Larson would add a basket and free throw to increase the lead, while Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover) found her first points close to the basket, getting the assist from Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter). Carpenter then added her first points at the 2:56 mark, and Kontny a few more layups to finish the second period up a bunch, 35-11.
The third started with another Tucker layup after an offensive rebound and three straight points from Kontny. A line change from Zach Otto-Fish midway through the quarter would give Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) her first two points, assisted by Reinertsen, followed by a Brittany Laehn (Gilmanton, Wis./Gilmanton) 3-pointer on a pass from Kontny. Superior would hold a 56-20 lead after three.
The defense continued to play well in the fourth, forcing two turnovers and a missed a 3-pointer in the opening two minutes. Laehn would get another three at the 7:24 mark of the period, and yet another at the 6:30 mark; Kane found another basket at 4:48, and Kaly Kostrova (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) two points a few minutes later. It was a total 'Jacket victory, 76-29.
Superior shot the ball well 50.8 percent from the field, including 3-of-6 from the 3-point line. Kontny had a game-high 22 points, while Carpenter and Reinertsen each had 11.
The Yellowjackets really hounded the Saints on defense, forcing 32 turnover, 26 of which were steals, and scoring 31 points off those turnovers.
Only one Saints scored in double-digits, as Senger had 10 points.
Superior will be back in action this Saturday, Feb. 3, when they play at home vs the Crown College Storm at 5 p.m.
