UW-Superior 66, Augsburg 55
SUPERIOR, Wis. (November 15, 2017) – In their season opener, the Yellowjackets defeated the Augsburg Auggies. Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) finished with a game-high 22 points, on 9-of-11 shooting; she also had nine rebounds and three assists.
The Yellowjackets fell in a early 10-3 hole to the Auggies, but a Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) layup and Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) mid-range jumper would cut the lead to 10-7. Superior would gain the lead late in the period after Larson laid it in on a pass from Jade Tucker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake), and the next possession, Tucker followed a rebound up with two points to end the period. Superior was up 15-14.
The second period would see the Yellowjackets stretch out their lead 23-19 on a Larson to Kontny layup, and then again at 26-19 after Larson hit the layup, and free throw. Four straight points from Kontny would end the half with the 'Jackets on top, 31-27.
Superior would hold the lead in the third, as Kontny and Larson added to their stat lines with jumpers and layups. Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover) would get in the mix, nailing a three pointer at 8:20, assisted by Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield). A five-minute stretch to end the period would see only two points from either team, holding the 'Jacket lead at 45-36.
The 'Jackets opened up their biggest lead in the third period, 16, after Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) sank two free throws. The Auggies would make a small run to get the deficit to nine, but Superior would hold on and closeout their first win of 2017-18 at 66-55.
Three 'Jackets would score in double-figures, as Larson finished with a game-high 22 points, while Kontny and Norlin had double-doubles in points and rebounds, with 15 -12, and 11-10 respectively. Leger would have a team-high four assists in the game.
Superior saw their biggest differential on the glass, out-rebounding Augsburg by 20, 52-32.
K'Aezha Wubben and Tamira McLemore led the Auggies in scoring with 14 and 11 points.
The Yellowjackets will make a road trip down to Eau Claire this weekend, as they take on former WIAC opponents UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout in the UW-Eau Claire Tip-off Classic, Friday Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. and Saturday Nov. 18 at 3 p.m.
