ST. PAUL, Minn. (October 28, 2017) – Superior closed out their regular season at non-conference opponent Hamline University, but couldn't get the win on the road, playing their second game in as many days.
The first set saw Superior get behind 9-4 after an attack error from the Pipers. The Jackets would come back on a 6-1 run and tie a 10-10, after a
Karlie Leif (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) service ace. The 'Jackets would then get the lead 12-11 on a handling error from Hamline. The Pipers would hold the lead, but Superior would get close at 21-19, on two kills, first from
Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East), and then from
Mara Cameron (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), both assisted by
Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley). The Pipers would close out the match on a kill, 25-22.
Superior was able to turn the tables in the second set. They got their first lead of the game at 8-7 after Cameron killed the ball yet again, assisted by VerWay. The Yellowjackets would get their biggest lead at 14-11 on a kill from senior
Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's), assisted by VerWay. Hamline would come close at 23-21, but the 'Jackets got the set win on an attack error from the Pipers.
Hamline stepped on the gas in the third set. Superior would jump out to a 14-8 lead after a
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) service ace and a kill from Nightingale, assisted from VerWay, but the Pipers found a way to come back and win the set 25-17.
The fourth set was another come-from-behind win for Hamline. The 'Jackets would get a 9-5 lead on a kill from Colligan, and then extend the lead to 14-8 on a kill from Nightingale, assisted by VerWay. Superior would hold a 24-21 lead after a timeout and a Colligan kill, but the Pipers got the win 26-24.
Nightingale would lead the team with 14 kills, while Ribich added nine and Colligan seven. VerWay would get a double-double on the afternoon with 36 assists and 14 digs.
Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) would lead the team with 17 digs, followed by
Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) with 15.
The Yellowjackets have less than a week to get back to form as they take on the Minnesota Morris Cougars next Wednesday, Nov. 1 in the UMAC Championship semi-final game, traveling to Morris for a 7 p.m. first serve.
