Caps for Cancer scheduled for September 21

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's and women's soccer teams will be hosting their Third Annual "Caps for Cancer" games on Saturday, September 21, when the teams play UW-Platteville. The women's game will be at 11:00 a.m. at the Superior High School Soccer Complex, while the men's game will be at 3:00 p.m. at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth.

Admission to the games is free and fans are encouraged to bring new, winter-style hats for men, women and children to be donated. Baseball caps will be accepted, but are not preferred for this event.

Through the first two campaigns, nearly 500 hats have been collected for donation. The caps that are collected will be donated to the Caring Ways Cancer Resource Center, which is funded by the Miller-Dwan Foundation and located in the Essentia Health Cancer Center. Caps will be given to people who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment in the Twin Ports as well as Ashland and the surrounding area.

"Our department does several events throughout the year to raise funds and awareness for many different cancers, and we always look forward to this being the first one," athletics director Steve Nelson said. "It is something that has started small, but we intend to keep it going in the hope that it gets bigger and people continue to try and make a difference in the lives of others. Anything that we can do to help out people in need or those who are going through a difficult time, we want to do it."

Winter caps for men, women, and children can be donated at the games that day, or they can be dropped off at the UW-Superior Athletic Offices, located on the second floor of the Marcovich Wellness Center on the UW-Superior campus. Anyone with questions about the event or for more information should contact Jon Garver with Yellowjacket Athletics at 715-395-4614.
